Treatment of chronic pelvic pain with the assistance of analgesic effects of low-frequency pulsed magnetic field was tested on 21 patients suffering from arthritis in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study (Rowe et al., 2005).
All 21 men were randomly divided into two groups. The control group received the treatment with a device that only simulated magnetic pulses.
Treatment lasted for 4 weeks and total of 8 half-hour applications were delivered. For the first 15 minutes, pulsed magnetic field was set to 10 Hz and for the remaining time it was adjusted to 50 Hz. The effects of treatment were evaluated in the follow-up after 3 months and after one year.
In the active group, the initial evaluation revealed 20% pain relief on average, while in the control group pain worsened. After a year, patients in the active group achieved even better results – 40% pain relief. The control group, on the other hand, showed almost no change in pain intensity.
These significant and long-lasting improvements in patients, who could not previously find an effective treatment for their prostatitis, demonstrate usefulness of pulsed magnetic therapy and its significant analgesic effects.
