Action potential of the isolated sciatic nerve

Action potential of the isolated sciatic nerve. This topic was addressed in a study by Ö. Coskun. The immediate effects of a 30-minute application of a pulsed magnetic field with a frequency of 50 Hz and an intensity of 1 mT were investigated in an animal model. The results were compared with a control group and showed surprising effects.

The action potential is the brief moment when the membrane potential of a cell rapidly increases and then decreases again to maintain the voltage difference between the cell’s internal environment and the external environment as the nerve impulse propagates. In neurons, action potentials are also known as nerve impulses.

Based on the results of this study, the maximum excitation (amplitude), hyperpolarization phase and action potential were significantly lower in the group that underwent pulsed magnetic therapy.

Thus, the application of a pulsed magnetic field with a frequency of 50 Hz and an intensity of 1 mT had a negative effect on the peripheral nerve, as it reduced the value of the spread and the hyperpolarization phase of its action potential.

In other words, pulsed magnet therapy significantly reduces the nerve impulses of the sciatic nerve and thus reduces the severe pain caused by sciatic nerve inflammation.
