Regeneration of damaged sciatic nerve and effects of pulsed magnetic therapy on the whole body was examined in animal model study (Mohammadi et al., 2014) that also compared those effects to the group whose injury of sciatic nerve had been bridged by special procedure.
During this procedure the research team had restored nerve conduction by bridging the damage with chitosan conduit. After the surgery, they assessed effects of pulsed magnetic therapy with frequency of 2 Hz and intensity of 0.3 mT (one hour a day, 5 days a week for 4 weeks) on regeneration of the nerve.
Behavioral, functional, electrophysiological and biomechanical parameters and morphometric analysis confirmed fastest regeneration of nerve fibers in the experimental group that underwent both pulsed magnetic therapy and chitosan grafting.
According to the study, this combination is thus considered effective, safe and appropriate treatment of peripheral nerves in clinical practice.
