Comparison of different treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome was conducted in 2016 on a group of 40 Egyptian women by Team D. M. Kamelova. The effects of a pulsed magnetic field with a frequency of 50 Hz and an intensity of 8 mT was also one of the treatment options tested.
All 40 women with idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome were divided into two groups in this randomized double-blind study. The first one underwent pulsed magnet therapy accompanied by exercises of the nerves and tendons of the affected wrist three times a week for four weeks. The second group was treated with therapeutic pulsed ultrasound using the same wrist exercises.
Pain level, hand function and strength, sensory and distal motor latency, and conduction velocity in the median nerve were evaluated before and after treatment. Significant decreases in pain and sensory and distal motor latency were noted in both groups, as well as large increases in median nerve conduction velocity and improvements in hand grip. Overall, however, the group treated with pulsed magnet therapy achieved much better results.
Thus, the results suggest that significant pain relief and improvement in wrist and hand function can be achieved in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome by positive action on the median nerve using both pulsed magnetotherapy and pulsed ultrasound. However, greater effectiveness can be expected from the effects of pulsed magnetic fields.
