Treatment of chronic tibial ulcers

Treatment of chronic tibial ulcers using a portable pulsed magnet therapy device in 31 patients was evaluated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel trial (Stiller et al., 1992). The results were published in the British Journal of Dermatology.

For 8 weeks, patients used a portable pulsed magnet therapy device at home for 3 hours a day.

The study compared the extension of the injury, the depth of the ulcer, and the level of pain before the start of the treatment, then after 4 weeks and finally after 8 weeks.

In the control group, no ulcer healed and, on the contrary, 54% of the patients deteriorated.

On the other hand, in the group that applied pulsed magnetotherapy , complete healing or significant improvement occurred in 50% of the patients, while no patient deteriorated. In addition, there was a significant reduction in the depth of the injury and pain relief.

Thus, the results of this study showed that low-frequency pulsed magnet therapy significantly accelerates and improves the healing of tibial ulcers and also relieves the associated pain.
