Efficacy of 5-10 Hz low-frequency pulsed magnetic field in treatment of back pain was evaluated on 36 patients in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study (Lee et al., 2006).
For added authenticity of the results, use of any painkillers or physiotherapy during the entire study was forbidden. For three weeks, pulsed magnetic field therapy was applied for 15 minutes three times a week. The following 4 weeks then served for evaluation of long-term effects of the therapy.
The results clearly confirmed the analgesic effect of pulsed magnetic field. Throughout the duration of this study, low-frequency pulsed magnetic field therapy was providing significant relief from pain to the patients.
The placebo group did not achieve such results in any of the three control points (after the therapy, one week from the end of the therapy and four weeks from the end of the therapy).
Pulsed magnetic field therapy with 5-10 Hz frequencies provably relieves from pain and improves mobility of patients. Therefore, pulsed magnetic therapy is useful therapeutic tool for the conservative treatment of chronic lower back pain.
