Treatment effects on persistent neuropathic pain were evaluated in a study (Weintraub et al., 2004) which tested a nine-hour application of pulsed magnetic field with a frequency of 30 Hz and an intensity of 2 mT in 24 patients.
Efficacy of pulsed magnetic therapy was, in this case, determined by comparison of patients’ pain scores before and after the treatment and also after 30 days from its completion.
After all nine applications, over 67% of patients experienced significant improvement. The results confirmed pain relief in more than 50% of patients. The level of pain decreased by more than 20% in the end of the therapy and by 39% after extra 30 days.
Study also noted that the best analgesic effect of pulsed magnetic therapy was achieved in patients who had extensive symptoms of neuropathic pain. So if patients have very mild symptoms, the analgesic effect of pulsed magnetic field with frequency of 30 Hz and intensity of 2 mT may not be noticeable.
Pulsed magnetic therapy is nonetheless very effective in treatment of extensive persistent neuropathic pain.
