The stimulation of bone growth by low-frequency pulsed magnet therapy was tested in 77 patients with femoral neck fractures by a research team from two major Italian universities (Faldini et al., 2010).
Femoral neck fractures are common especially in older people, where they are quite difficult to heal due to the osteoporosis that is usually present. They are often caused by minor trauma, such as a fall.
For these reasons, this study looked for an alternative to complicated procedures such as hip replacement, and sought to determine whether low-frequency pulsed magnet therapy could reduce the time it takes for bone to fuse, increase the percentage of healed bone, and delay possible femoral neck necrosis (osteonecrosis).
Patients were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. The treatment consisted of eight hours of pulsed magnetotherapy daily for 90 days. Fracture healing was assessed by X-ray at 30, 60 and 90 days.
The final results revealed that in such cases pulsed magnet therapy guarantees almost 100% chance of healing!In the control group only 69% of fractures healed.
At the same time, the analgesic effects of the pulsed magnetic field were confirmed , because at each follow-up, the active group showed a significant reduction in pain compared to the control group. Thus, this study clearly demonstrates that low-frequency pulsed magnet therapy accelerates fracture healing and also relieves pain, resulting in a better quality of life for patients.
