Possibility of treatment of cervical osteoarthritis with low-frequency pulsed magnetotherapy at frequencies from
0.1-64 Hz
and an intensity of 40 µT was the subject of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study by the research team of S. T. Sutbeyaz (2006).
The research team focused on the impact on pain, range of motion and functional status of the cervical spine in 34 patients. Pulsed magnet therapy was applied to the whole body using a mattress.
A total of 18 randomly selected patients underwent the actual treatment, with 30-minute applications twice a day for three weeks.
The other patients served for comparison in the control group, in which only an imitation pulsed magnet therapy device was used.
After treatment, the active group experienced significant pain relief. In contrast, there was no change in the placebo group. Similar positive effects of the pulsed magnetic field were also observed for other evaluation indices.
Not only does pulsed magnet therapy significantly relieve the pain of patients suffering from cervical osteoarthritis, but it also improves the range of motion of the cervical spine. It is therefore also identified by this study as an appropriate adjunctive treatment.
