Comparison of spinal pain treatment effects between epidural injection and pulsed magnet therapy

A comparison of the effects of spinal pain treatment between epidural injection and pulsed magnet therapy was carried out in 2018 in a clinical trial, the results of which were published in the British Medical Journal.

Epidural injections are one of the most common non-surgical treatments for chronic back pain. They are used to treat lumbar spinal stenosis, axial spinal pain and radicular pain caused by herniated discs. In contrast, pulsed electromagnetic therapy provides a non-invasive and safe method for treating the site of injury, the source of pain and inflammation. The question was therefore whether the effects of pulsed magnetic fields could be equal to the aforementioned non-surgical, but invasive, treatment.

Thus, sixty patients with chronic discogenic low back pain were recruited for this study. Patients with other causes of back pain were excluded. One half was treated with caudal epidural injection twice a week and the other with pulsed magnet therapy daily for four weeks. All patients were evaluated clinically and in terms of function at the end of treatment and 6 months after the end of treatment.

Both groups experienced significant pain reliefimmediately after the end of the therapy. Similarly, a significant improvement in back function was observed on average in all patients. In the final evaluation, the results showed no major difference between the groups and thus between the treatment methods. However, pain relief in patients treated with pulsed magnet therapy was slightly better on average 6 months after the end of therapy.

Thus, the findings suggest that non-surgical intervention with epidural injection of corticosteroids is as effective in treating chronic spinal disorders in relieving pain and improving back function as the application of pulsed magnetic fields.
