Evaluation of two treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome
An evaluation of two treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome was performed on 40 patients by a medical team (Dakowicz et al., 2010) at the University Hospital in Bialystok, Poland. The effectiveness of low-frequency pulsed magnetotherapy with frequencies of 10-40 Hz and intensities of 1-5 mT was tested, even in combination with laser stimulation.
All patients were divided into two groups and underwent low-frequency pulsed magnetotherapy during ten working days and with a two-week break after five days. However, only one group also underwent laser biostimulation. The evaluation of treatment effects was performed after the first five days of therapy, after the end of therapy and then after 6 months.
Already after the first five days of therapy, both groups experienced an average of almost 40% pain relief. During the two-week break, the intensity stayed at the same level, but then dropped even further after the treatment was fully completed. Overall, both groups experienced an average of 70% pain relief and sleep improvement, suggesting that the therapy should be repeated.
However, the long-term effects of the treatment were evident even after 6 months, when the pain intensity was still reduced, although only by 30%. Comparing the results of the two groups also showed that laser biostimulation adds modestly to the overall effectiveness of the treatment, but lacks a long-term effect.
Otherwise, the findings of this study clearly confirm the analgesic effect of low-frequency pulsed magnetic fields. Thus, pulsed magnet therapy is an appropriate treatment for patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, either in combination with or without laser biostimulation.
