Treatment of ankylosing spondylitis (Bekhterev’s disease) using low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy was tested on 40 patients at specialized Arthrocenter in the Czech Republic under the guidance of prof. MUDr. Karel Trnavský.
Ankylosing spondylitis is the most common inflammatory disease of the vertebrae. It is mainly treated pharmacologically, but also with exercises, physiotherapy and balneology.
Clinical study in this case compared the efficacy of physiotherapy based on regular exercise (first group) and treatment with added low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy (second group). A total of 40 patients participated in this study.
Standard treatment (first group) took place twice a week and consisted of group exercises that are common in the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis. So patients completed 24 group exercises in those three months.
For the intensive treatment (second group), 12 applications of low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy were added on top of the group exercises. The results were evaluated in line with the usual procedures and methodology using questionnaires BASDAI and BASF.
It was demonstrated that intensive treatment, which included pulsed magnetic field, is more effective than the standard treatment. The analgesic effect of pulsed magnetic therapy was also very beneficial for the entire treatment process and for the overall patients’ quality of life.
Study’s findings thus confirm that in the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis (Bekhterev’s disease) a combination of low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy and other intensive method can be absolutely recommended.
