Reduction of multiple sclerosis symptoms using pulsed magnetic therapy was verified on 117 patients at three US medical facilities in a study (Lappin et al., 2003) which observed mainly impact on fatigue, spasticity, bladder control, mood, motor skills, sleep and overall quality of life.
Effects of pulsed magnetic field on the MS symptoms were assessed using the Quality of Life Index (3QLI), mobility index and MS quality of life inventory (MSQLI); in other words evaluation of fatigue, spasticity, bladder control and pain associated with mood, movement, sleep and work load.
Results were negative for bladder control, mixed for spasticity and positive for fatigue. It is important to note that patients who were using drugs for MS had a better response to pulsed magnetic treatment.
On the other hand, patients who were entirely confined to a wheelchair, showed no improvement. The study therefore suspects that the therapy is less effective, the greater is the nerve damage (loss of myelin fibers in nerve axons, thus greater damage to axons). Pulsed magnetic therapy is most efficient when nerves are still more or less undamaged or if they are in the inflammatory phase of brain lesion development.
However, results of this study clearly demonstrate that exposure to weak pulsed electromagnetic fields can alleviate the symptoms of MS, especially fatigue and spasticity, which has a positive effect on the overall quality of life of patients.
