Manifestations of Bechterew’s disease in the hip area and the combined effects of pulsed magnetic therapy and stretching exercises were examined in a double-blind, randomized, controlled study (Turan et al., 2014).
Overall 66 patients, who had been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and were completing muscle-strengthening exercises of the hip region at that time, participated in this study. Pulsed magnetic therapy with 2 Hz frequency was applied to only 35 of them and not even the physiotherapists knew to which ones exactly.
Assessment of pain at strain and at rest, morning stiffness, fatigue, functioning of the hip and other indicators took place prior to the therapy and then also after one, three and six months.
Already after one month, there was significant decrease of pain at strain as well as overall improved functioning of the hip observed in the group that was treated with pulsed magnetic therapy. Also, period of morning stiffness of muscles and joints was shortened.
The study results confirm that pulsed magnetic therapy can significantly contribute to hip pain relief during rehabilitation exercises in patients suffering from ankylosing spondylitis (Bechterew’s disease).
