Better pain relief after knee replacement was the intention of the Italian research team of P. Adravanti (2014) who tested the effects of low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy with 75 Hz frequency and 1.5 mT intensity on 33 patients.
For many years now, more and more patients are satisfied with surgery of the knee joint and its total replacement. However, this goes hand in hand with long-term – in some cases even a year-long – post-operative pain in more than one third of these patients. The aim of this study was to affect the pain and inflammation at the very outset and prevent long-term pain and functional limitations of the knee joint.
Eligible patients who have undergone total knee replacement surgery were randomly assigned to either the experimental, or control group. Treatment lasted 60 days and pulsed magnetic therapy was applied every day for four hours. Results of the groups were compared after 1, 2 and 6 months.
The experimental group experienced the analgesic and healing effects of low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy already in the first month after the surgery, as reported by the first assessment. Pain and swelling considerably decreased and functionality of the knee improved. Also, after six months, pain in this group was much milder than in the control group.
Even after three years there were much less complaints about walking difficulties and pain in the experimental group than in the control.
Timely application of low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy for promotion of healing and postoperative alleviation of inflammation of the knee can thus greatly relieve consequential long-term pain. This is also why it is recommended as part of a comprehensive treatment for patients undergoing total knee replacement surgery.
